Minimalist Elm Funeral Urn With Gold Leaf Detail
Here is a piece that embodies simplicity yet possesses character and great luminous beauty. This minimalist funeral urn is entirely crafted from solid elm and adorned with a subtle touch of gold leaf that adds a hint of light. Elm, with its dancing grain patterns and honeyed, sunlit colors, has a distinctive feature: a textured pattern reminiscent of partridge feathers. This urn could be a beautiful way to honor the life and memory of your loved one.
The addition of gold leaf is inspired by an ancient Japanese technique called Kintsugi. It is a personal interpretation adapted to my practice, highlighting the beauty found in imperfections and showing that there is light in the cracks. Echoing this ancient art of repairing broken pottery with gold, I celebrate the imperfections of the wood by adding a touch of gold leaf, emphasizing its value and beauty. The delicate golden lines represent the beauty that can emerge from imperfections and the traces left by life. I use imitation gold leaf, which is actually brass (an alloy of copper and zinc), while being mindful of the ethical sourcing of materials used in my work.
The finish is achieved with a high-quality, environmentally friendly oil, applied and polished by hand in multiple layers. It provides a protective and durable finish with a soft satin sheen that enhances the natural beauty of the wood. The interior is treated with an additional coat of beeswax, creating a smooth and soft surface to hold and protect your loved one's ashes.
