I thought the simple act of deciding on an urn for Barb’s interment on August 25th would be a painful experience. But I couldn’t be more pleased with my journey for Barb.
Barbara looked at an old growth white pine for the past year at our house at Sand Lake while she watched birds feeding, and read, and I'm sure thought about her friends and family and her life.
I’ve had an urn made from an old growth white pine board that comes from the family that owned our land for over 100 years. The urn was made by craftsperson Geneviève Gaboury (INDIGÈNE), a wood artisan. Wood speaks to her, and she can see and draw out beauty in wood, and believes in the finest craftsmanship. And my granddaughter Devon has chosen a humming bird to be engraved on the urn. Barb told me once she had this very eerie feeling of seeing herself when she looked at Devon.
By a nice touch of serendipity I carried the wood from Sand Lake to Geneviève in Quebec City. The journey to deliver the wood, and working with Geneviève on the artistic and design choices had a profound affect on my well being. It was as important as getting the best urn I could.
Geneviève has given my family an extraordinary memory. My daughters and granddaughter and I could not be happier with Geneviève’s artistic and professional decisions from the old growth white pine and cedar we provided.
And with how she sought perfection, and her thoughtfulness and kindness.
We feel fortunate we found Geneviève and with the urn she gave us.
She helped us so much with this journey.

Genevieve made us a custom urn based on a previous design she had created which we really liked with walnut and ambrosia. I came across her shop by chance but knew right away we wanted something different and special for our daughter.
It was lovely to see the work progress and when the final urn arrived yesterday, we were so pleased. The little touches, like the matching tiny vase (beautiful) and hand written thoughtful card made it all that much more special.
Genevieve's work is unique and special. We wanted something that we could have on display as a constant reminder of our daughter, but without it looking like an urn. This is really a piece of beautiful artwork.

This is a beautiful unique and special wooden box for my Dad's ashes to live in. I wanted something more personal for him and the wooden urns the funeral service sold us looked similar to a coffin and the wood looked almost black. I'm so glad Dad will live in this and I think he'd tell you the same. All along the way I was receiving updates and photos of the wooden box in the making - which for me examples the care and respect she had for the piece she was making for me. I would highly recommend this shop and although postage costs were high to post it to Australia I would pay that extra just so I can have this elegant box in my home.
